2021 (MMXXI) is perhaps the most anticipated year of the 3rd millennium. A vaccine is arriving, a new president is waiting (and waiting) in the wings for the West Wing. March Madness may even return? Maybe in August?
The 21st year of the 21st century will be a common year starting on Friday of the Gregorian calendar, the 2021st year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, and the 2nd year of the 2020s decade.
All books and films produced in 1925 will enter the public domain in the US this year. That includes F. Scott Fitzgerald’s great American novel, The Great Gatsby, and The Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney.
Recreational cannabis will be legal in New Jersey and Montana on January 1, followed by South Dakota on July 1.
May 26 there’s a total lunar eclipse. A total solar follows on December 4.
The pandemic and its aftermath will make for some quirky calendar adjustments. The 2020 Summer Olympics (Olympiad XXXII) are scheduled to run (as well as swim and jump) from July 23-Aug 8, 2021.
So much for the preamble. Now let’s talk about calendars.
Sure you have one on your phone, but what about your wall? Nothing says Retro or “I would rather be anywhere else in time,” than a good old vintage calendar. Of course you should support artists and other creatives who have produced new works for 2021, but if for some reason you are stuck in your house with no stimulus, you might have a calendar that would love to fill the bill for another year.
Twelve times out of the past 112 years, the pattern for 2021 has happened. The new year begins on a Friday, Christmas is on Saturday, and the year ends on a Friday. The older the rarer, like 1909, 1915, and 1926.
Here are the other years that work for 2021, beginning with the most recent:
2010
1999
1993
1982
1971
1965
1954
1943
1937
Remember, this year’s layout repeats in 2027! Happy hunting and Happy New Year!
