Professor Mikey here, welcome to a special Old School After School Special, a rare live performance from California surf rockers Jan and Dean!
Jan Berry and Dean Torrence met and formed their duo at University High School in West LA. Jan was also friends with Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, and those two wrote Jan and Dean’s first number one hit, Surf City.
In late October 1964 Jan and Dean hosted the The filming of The TAMI Show which brought together several major artists including The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, James Brown and The Famous Flames, The Supremes, and Chuck Berry for the big screen.

Now we catch up with them a few months later, March 12, 1965, once again at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Jan Berry’s tragic life changing car accident was a year in the future, so this show captures the two at their peak performance level.
The album was called Command Performance, Jan & Dean/Live In Person, and was held from publication for ten years. Note: this is a vinyl rip from a disc that’s been sealed for almost a half century.
Set the controls for 1965, wax you boards, and get ready to surf in the ocean or on the sidewalk. Jan and Dean in concert on the Old School After School Special…
