What Was in the Boot of the Second Man on the Moon?π©π»βπ
On the 52nd Anniversary of Apollo XIβs first manned landing on the moon, I would like to share an unexpected moment from an interview I did with Buzz Aldrin twenty years ago.
I asked Dr. Aldrin, who is now 91 and the oldest of the four surviving moon walkers, if he could tell me something about the mission that we had never heard.
Aldrin replied that his landing of the Eagle module was so soft, the legs of the craft that were designed to compress so the astronauts could make one small step failed to do so, leaving them both with giant leaps.
When Aldrin jumped down to the lunar surface, his urine collection device broke, sending the contents down inside his boot. βSo,β said Aldrin, βmy giant leap for mankind was a wet one.β Aldrin carried out his activities, sloshing in his own pee.
Dr. Aldrin was not hampered in the least, yet he was unable to remove any portion of his suit while on the lunar surface. On returning to the capsule he realized he was the first man on the moon who could not pour piss out of a boot.
